If you want to succeed, double your failure rate.
~ Thomas Watson
In the words of Anthony Robbins, your past is not equal to your future.
This is true only if you are Anthony Robbins or you share the same visionary power and discipline. For mortals like us, our past is our future, because that is what we have been through. That is who we are, and what we know. Until and unless we can see a clear future, we will just plod along. Life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone.
Andrew Carnegie, Bill Gates, Donald Trump, JP Morgan, Li Ka Shing, Michael Dell, Paul Getty, Richard Branson and Sam Walton - all titans of business and multi-billionaires. They are also human, which means you share something in common with them. I’m sure if you know how they did it, you can duplicate their action, and hopefully, their results.
To understand why they are who they are, understand what they went through. There are many biographies written about them. Study them. Be inspired by them. Learn from them. Every one of them reads like an exciting adventure. In essence, it described how they overcome obstacles that seem insurmountable. When they were struggling, they didn’t know if they would make it. They were human just like us.
But they have something special that we should all emulate: a supreme sense of self confidence, and a bigger goal than themselves. They have a vision. They focused on what is possible, much more than what if something went wrong. That alone made all the difference.
One more thing: they are their experience. Their experience shaped who they are. Their experience shaped who they become. They have tasted success many times. They can duplicate success at will, no matter how many times they failed, because it has become part of them. Success is hardwired into them.
In the same way, you are your experience. What you experience regularly becomes you, whether it is success or failure. There is no right or wrong. It is just the way experience is. For instance, you have been doing well in life. When I ask you to strive for success, it is a way of life for you, a norm for you. You have no problem feeling the joy and excitement of success. You can identify with the positive emotions and you end up being successful.
On the contrary, if I ask some one who is poor to think and act rich, he will be at a loss. He will be frustrated, because he does not have the experience of being rich. There is no reference point for him. He doesn’t have the emotion of feeling rich in his databank of experiences, which means it is that much harder for him to be rich. So go out there and get new experiences to replace your old, especially when your old experiences could be the stumbling block holding you back.
Your future will simply be an extension of your past if you will do nothing to change it. Things will continue as they are, unless there is a strong enough force to change its course.
You are governed by your own standards, rules and scripts. You are where you are because of all these mental models, decisions and actions. They are the same old mental programs that prevent you from being successful, because new programs cannot be installed! It’s blocked by all these oldies. Otherwise you would have succeeded long ago.
Take a critical look at what you do everyday. That routine is giving you exactly what you have. There is no right or wrong. It is simply cause and effect. You do the right things, you get the right results. You do the wrong thing, you get the wrong results.
Your routine gives you meaning. Over time, it becomes your life. It becomes who you are. Until and unless you change it, you will keep getting the same results.
